Gloria, we remember you today and every day as the fearless and fabulous trailblazer of pop culture journalism!  Thank you for your inspiration and encouragement as you helped us navigate through our challenging pre-teen and teenage years.  Thank you for respecting and validating our passion for the music, television and movies that would become such important touchstones for our generation and generations to follow. Thank you for expanding our young ideas of what was "fab" and believing that we were worthy of your efforts to educate us!  Most of all, thank you for devoting your life's work to us and for loving all of us equally.  We love you Gloria!

"Betcha didn't know that Apple recording star James Taylor once sang at the historic Night Owl in Greenwich Village during his "struggling folksinger" days!  The Night Owl is the same club where Peter Tork, Tim Hardin, the Lovin' Spoonful, Cass Elliot, Richie Havens and many other pop stars got their start!  Don't miss James' first Apple LP.  It's called JAMES TAYLOR and it's really sayin' something.  One of the songs he sings on it is called Night Owl in honor of the many months he spent singing in that now closed club!

Crawdaddy on Gloria Stavers (April, 1969)

"Gloria Stavers sits high above Fifth Avenue overlooking Central Park, if not the world.  Her gig is editing a fan magazine for teenage girls.  Small potatoes?  Not quite.  For through the mesmeric medium that is Sixteen, Gloria Euphoria is able to open and shut the portals of the Top Twenty as if it were her own private filing cabinet.

It's a matter of arithmetic.  Seventy-five percent of all singles and forty-five percent of all LPs are bought by girls between the ages of twelve and seventeen.  Sixteen Magazine has a paid circulation of one million teenyboppers and four million friends read for free.  And so when EYE Magazine got around to listing the Makers and Breakers, they included Bill Graham as well as Murray the K, but Gloria Stavers was first on the list.  God and Gloria would have it no other way."

Gloria Stavers Shot Rock & Roll!

The photography exhibit "Who Shot Rock and Roll" features a "who's who" of rock photographers including James Marshall, Lynn Goldsmith, Annie Liebowitz, Henry Diltz and Gloria Stavers.  Gloria was not only a pop culture tastemaker, trailblazing magazine editor and writer, she also took some of rock's most iconic photos of Jim Morrison, The Beatles, Bob Dylan and many others. Here is her photo of a relatively unknown David Bowie, featured in the exhibit and the book (Who Shot Rock and Roll: A Photographic History, 1955-Present) which it celebrates.

"GeeGee recommended LPs this month include Paul Revere & Raiders (Featuring Mark Lindsay) Greatest Hits --which includes a gorgeous free color picture brochure and liner notes written by our own Gloria -- on Columbia; also on Columbia is The Best of Bob Dylan and this great album includes a free psyched-out wild DYLAN poster); Blues Magoos Electric Comic Book on Mercury; Aretha Franklin's I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You on Atlantic and Mitch Ryder's Sock It To Me on New Voice.

England's BEE GEES are the great new thing to watch out for! They may very well take the states by storm.  Their first single is The New York Mining Disaster and they are on Atlantic -- stay alert! ... Am also clue-ing you in to ENGLEBERT HUMPERDINCK on Parrot, BRUTE FORCE on Columbia, PEACHES & HERB on Date, the NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND on Liberty, VINNIE BASILE on Davy Jones Records -- and a charming ring-a-ding duo on Reprise called FRANK & NANCY somebodyorother.

By the time you read this, BOB DYLAN will be back with us.  At least, if my dreams come true -- he will.  Meanwhile, do like the SEEDS say and become a "flower child".  Show Love.

Farewell to David Cassidy

David Cassidy, one of the most popular teen idols in the history of 16 Magazine, passed away this week at age 67.  His untimely passing sent a wave of sadness among fans worldwide, coupled with memories of the happier and more innocent times he represented. For several years in the 1970s, David dominated 16 Magazine as few "faves" did in the magazine's history. David was a very accomplished singer, musician, and actor who brought people a lot of joy, sometimes at the expense of his own career goals. He will be remembered fondly by a generation raised on the "The Partridge Family" TV show, and the many hit recordings from the show and his subsequent solo career. Here's a look at just a few of David's appearances in 16.

Paul Revere (January 7, 1938 - October 4, 2014)

The fearless leader of one of the top groups ever to capture the loyalties of 16 Magazine readers, Paul Revere was a rock music maestro, a tenacious businessman, and a tireless touring road warrior.  For the better part of the 1960s, a pivotal period in rock music, Paul Revere & The Raiders dominated the pages of 16, battling back the British Invasion with an arsenal of rocking records, ferocious live performances, good looks and style.  Despite having a more "mature" image than other 16 faves, no one had more fun or injected more zaniness into the exclusive photo sessions that Gloria conducted.  Paul's joyful anarchy fit right into 16's crazy cover collages (see examples below.)  Paul eventually embraced the role of "Uncle Paul" to newer generations of Raiders and fans.  But he never lost the "Spirit of '67" that endeared him and the early Raider lineups to 16 readers.  You gave us everything you had in you, Paul.  Thanks for the ride.

Dylan by Gloria

Readers of 16 Magazine know that Gloria Stavers was an early supporter of Bob Dylan, giving him feature articles and rave record reviews.  As one of the first rock photographers, Gloria's photos of Dylan in Central Park capture a significant moment as his career was taking off. One of these photos graces the CD cover of Dylan's Bootleg Series-The Whitmark Demos: 1962-1964.
